Extravasation Injuries

Our lawyers have successfully represented patients injured by extravasation of I.V. fluids and medications.

Extravasation is when medicine or fluid leaks into the tissue surrounding the area of an IV injection site or port site. An extravasation injury can cause severe complications depending on the type of drug and/or fluid that has leaked into the surrounding tissue. If the extravasation goes undiagnosed, extravasation can cause serious harm, including permanent tissue injury, nerve injury, loss of limb, or even death.

An extravasation injury may be the result of medical negligence if a the nurse fails to follow specific protocols in administering IV medication or if a nurse or doctor fails to quickly and properly diagnose and treat the extravasation.
